5 years later folks are still sending us their beloved yet crumbling Rocky hunting and work boots! Vibram Middlebury Gumlite ($75) or Vibram Montagna soles ($85) are still the main choices. Hammer Thrower Gets Regular Resoles!

Mickey Bitsko, or The Hammerman as we call him, has been a regular customer for a long time. He has been a competitive hammer thrower for a number of years and still competes currently at the Masters level. He also coached the throwing team at Cedarville University for 20ish years. The above picture shows him with his throwing hammer and his repair of choice: a hard smooth rubber resole on his hammer throwing shoes. These old dogs don't see a lot of walking, but they get "spun" on repeatedly, causing a hole at the ball of his very quickly. Now don't get me wrong, we have also patched the upper a number of times. There is a chance that the blue pair are from his college days (!!!).
This is what we do! Keeping things of value in use. Keeping the perfect shoe on your foot.

We have been working on English riding boots like crazy lately. Calf stretching, elastic and leather gussets, shortening shafts, replacing and repairing zippers, adding zippers, resoling. Replacement Footbeds for Super Birkis

Although this looks like an anthroology photo, this is a comparison of a new Super Birki Footbed versus a well used pair brought in by a customer for replacement.
Replacements cost $19.95 and we keep them in stock, as well as Profi Birki and Outdoor Clog Replacements.

Repairing an antique... letter opener?

Many things were made from leather in the past. Often we have special items that have been passed down to us, but have never really been taken care of. Many cherished but uncared for items come our way. In this case, we  were asked to repair the leather sheath of a dagger (ok, it was a little smaller than a dagger, but YOU can't tell from the photo, can you?).  Feel free to send pictures of any items that might need some help.

Customized boots: Sailor Moon?!?!

We do a good bit of customization here at Xenia Shoe and Leather.

 Latest was the tweaking of the top cuff on these boots to make turn them into a more authentic Sailor Moon costume boot.

Increase your sound! Double soling your tap shoes.

  We have been doubling the thickness of half soles on tap shoes for a while. The folks who use them (sadly, none of us at the shop!) say it increases the volume of their tapping.  The shoe pictured had a couple things done to it.
1. The "half sole" , or forefoot section, had the thickness doubled in leather and the tap installed.
2. A grippy rubber piece was added for traction and balance behind the tap
3. The heel height was also increased in keeping with the half sole increase and the tap was reinstalled.

The second picture is the cosmetically cleaned up final product. The coloring disguises the new additions and makes the edges shine like new.

Hockey Glove Repair - REPALMING!

Hockey gloves see hard, wet, sweaty use. The brunt of the effect is on the flexible palms.

 Looks like it is time to repalm. This glove will get a horsehide replacement with a synthetic palm piece.

$50 per pair most times. Done as fast as needed.

Challenge: Accepted and Accomplished!

Peeled off the boot bumper, cleaned up the leather, sewed new welt onto both toes, replaced the Supersole 2.0 bottoms, and shined them up with some Kiwi Cordovan and I am not ashamed to say it, THEY LOK AMAZING! This job cost $88 which is STILL less than half the price of replacing them!. Totally worth it.

Challenge: Major Campfire Toe Melt!

Maybe you've been here before: Kicking back on a cool night in front of a crackling fire, hanging out with some friends, maybe looking up at the stars, maybe enjoying a beverage, MAYBE not noticing that your shoes have OVERheated  just a bit! That's what happened here.! $200+ Red Wing boots with plastic Boot Bumpers attached to the toes, all quite melted! Notice the leaves embedded in the melted rubber!

Our Task: Get things as close to original as possible. Stay tuned for the results.

Shop Employee brings his band to the shop!

The Shoehorns, of which our employee Matt Jopson is the lead singer, did a special show at the shop this Saturday night. Good times were had by all.

The First Friday AMAZING RACE strikes again @ Xenia Shoe. This time participants had to lace up a pair of Red Wing 435s (a nice wider fitting boot BTW) with a pair of oven mitts on their hands. This was our last First Friday for 2011, so check it out next April! Thanks to all who participated and made it fun!
